4-at-a-time Flying Geese

4-at-a-time Flying Geese

Let's make flying geese four-at-a-time!

Start out with one large square, which will be the center of your flying geese, and four smaller squares that will be the wings of your flying geese.  I am demonstrating with one 5 1/2" sqaure and four 3" squares.  I have a free pattern for you here: Flying Geese Pattern

Place two small sqaures right sides together with the larger square with the smaller squares going in opposite corners,  so that it looks like this.

Grab a marking tool  and a ruler. Place the ruler so that it is lining up along  the corners  of the smaller squares and  draw your  line from one corner to the other.  You can use any marking tool for this.  This line will not be a part of your final project.  It's actually going to be a line that we're going to cut on later, so any marking tool would work for this.

Next, sew one quarter inch  on each side of that line.

Once you have stitched on either side of the drawn line, you will cut on the line.  I line up my ruler so that the quarter inch mark is on one of my  lines,  making sure that I'm cutting from corner to corner on that drawn line. Press the smaller triangles away from the large triangle.

You will end up with some funny looking little units.  Take one of the remaining small squares  place it in the corner of one unit, opposite of  the sewn line and draw a diagonal line on the square.

Sew on each side of this line one quarter inch away. Repeat with the remaining unit and square.

Then, take a ruler and cut on  the drawn line.

You now have four flying geese! Press these open and trim to the correct size.

For trimming, I use  the Wing Clipper Ruler by Deb Tucker Studio 180.  It has amazing markings that make it really easy to cut the flying geese without any issues. And I can quickly trim my flying geese with no stress.

Ta da!  Four-at-attime, flying geese. A simple way to get beautiful flying geese every time.

Here's the video if you prefer to watch the tutorial.  In the video I also demonstrate how I trim the flying geese with a regular ruler and the Deb Tucker ruler.  Also you can download the pattern with the measurements and steps here: Flying Geese Pattern
