Aurora-#QuiltBlockMania

Hello! Hello! Welcome to the final Quilt Block Mania of 2024!

It's bee a while since I created a block, but I had such a fun idea for this month, that I had to participate.  The theme this month is sparkle, which seems like an easy choice for the wintery holiday season.  When I thought of places in the US that had "sparkle" I immediately thought of the Aurora Borealis.  While it is most visible in Alaska, it has made its way to North Carolina a couple of times this year.

When thinking about how to construct the block, I knew I wanted something that had waves of light across a solid background.  I had a lot of orphan half square triangles in my stash.  The jewel tones of the fabrics were perfect for this block, although I do think a darker background would be beautiful.  After playing around with the units, I came up with the fun wavy block and Aurora was born.

The pattern uses two colors of fabric and shows how to make 16-at-a-time half square triangles.  You can certainly use scrappier fabrics like I did in my test block, but the two color version can be really cool and comes together very quickly with the 16-at-a-time method.

Even better, look how cool the quilt is if you make several blocks!

The Aurora pattern is free through the month of December for my newsletter subscribers.  Subscribe by clicking the link or photo below.
