Behind the Design of the Highland Plaid Quilt

The Benartex Fabrics Christmas in July Virtual Fabric Show has been such a fun event to participate in. As a Sewcial Star I was asked to choose one of their fall or Christmas fabric lines and create a project showcasing that fabric. I chose the Highland Glen fabric collection by Jim Shore. I've always loved Jim Shore and was introduced to him by my very first library assistant, Nancy Headley. Nancy loved collecting the Santa figurines, but she knew that snowmen were my favorite Christmas decoration so she would gift me a new snowman each Christmas. This was before I was a quilter, but I still loved the folk art quilts that adorned each figure.

I decided to use the fabrics to create a wall hanging that highlighted the large Santa panel and several of the smaller panels. To frame the festive panel, I chose the classic Scotch Plaid block, a fitting tribute to a collection named for the Scottish Highlands.

Since I was introduced to Jim Shore by my friend Nancy I added Friendship Star blocks to celebrate the warmth and friendships of the holiday season.

I put everything together with the really cute Christmas tree border strip. I love how it turned out and can't wait to hang it up during the holiday season.
