Book Review: Cakewalk by Moda All Stars
Before I was a full-time quilt pattern designer and instructor, I was a Librarian. During my 18 years as a Librarian, I wrote professional book reviews for School Library Journal and Library Media Connection. I thought it would be fun to bring those skills into my quilting world and review quilt and craft books for you. For every review I also do either a project or one of the skills in the book to test how well-written the instructions are. My goal is to help you build a craft library that is intentional and is filled with books you will pick up over and over again.

What I Loved:
- 13 really great and unique quilt patterns
- A lot of great ideas for layer cakes
- Each pattern quickly tells how many layer cakes I need for each project
- Patterns are very easy to read and follow
My First Project:
When I first bought this book, it was to make the Celebration Pattern using Ahoy Mermaids from Riley Blake. It was really fun and easy to make.
My Project:
For this review I made the Variable Star Pattern using Blooming Color Harmony and Superior Solids from Benartex. I decided to use the dark teal instead of white for my background fabric. This pattern only needed one layer cake.
The quilt turned out beautifully and the instructions were super easy to follow. I will admit that I didn't read the pattern beforehand and thought it would be a lot easier. I didn't realize that it was made up of 80 blocks! But that was my fault, not the book's, so I didn't hold that against the book. But look how gorgeoud this pattern is with the Benartex fabrics!
There are already two more quilts that I want to make from this book, so it is definitley a keeper! If you buy a lot of 10" precuts, this is a great book for them.
I plan to get this project quilted and then donate it to the Durham Foster Care program that my local guild supports. Special thanks to Benartex for providing the fabric for this review.
