Celtic Charm Appliqué Tutorial

Celtic Charm Appliqué Tutorial

In this blog post I will demonstrate how to make the Celtic Charm Block.

First, you need the template.  You can get it here: Celtic Charm Pattern

Once you have printed out the templete, trace the shapes onto a two-sided fusible. Flexi-fuse is my favorite for machine and hand sewn appliqué.  Place the fusible with the papery side up and trace the shape. For the Celtic Knot,  you do not have to trace the background piece if you don't want to.  You can make the block with just the knot if you prefer.

Next, loosely cut around the traced shapes. Do not cut on the line. I cut about a quarter of an inch around each shape.

Once your shapes are cut, place the fusible on the wrong side of the fabric with the glue side down and then iron the fusible to the fabric. Hold the iron on the fusible anywhere from three to five seconds. Make sure the lift and set the iron when pressing, don't slide the iron as it may shift your fabric or fusible.

The next step will be to cut the shapes.  Now you will cut the shapes along the lines. When cutting the centers, I fold the shape just a little bit snd cut a small opening in the center of the piece I need to cut out.  Then I can cut along the lines on the inside.

Now it is time to fuse the shape to the background.  First, find the center of your background by folding in half twice.  Then, peel  the paper backing off your shape and place it in the center of the background.  Take my iron and press and hold to adhere the fabric shape to the background.  Again, don't slide the iron because that might shift your appliqué.

Once the appliqué is in place, it's time to stitch the edges. I used a straght stitch for one and a zig zag for the other.

So that is how you can make the Celtic Charm block.  You can get this pattern for free when you sign up for my newsletter. Celtic Charm Pattern

Now, go make something beautiful.
