Welcome back to another month of #QuiltBlockMania! The theme is drinks for March so for our tour across the US, I’m bringing you to my home state of North Carolina. This month I am excited to share Cheerwine with you. Cheerwine is a cherry flavored soda that was created in 1917 by L.D. Peeler in Salisbury, NC during a sugar shortage. The burgundy-red color of the soda was the inspiration for the name.
I also wanted to include a pieced background for this block because the Cheerwine bottle just didn’t seem very exciting on its own. Since Cheerwine is from North Carolina I thought it would be fun to see if there was a traditional North Carolina quilt block. It turns out that there is a beautiful block called The Star of North Carolina. I found a source for this block on the Quilt Index website. This version of the block was in the 1928 edition of the Ladies Art Company Quilt Pattern Catalog.
While this block is absolutely gorgeous, I didn’t want to make it too complicated since we are going to applique the Cheerwine bottle on top. I took inspiration from the center of the block to create a modified 9 patch (also known as a plain block in the 1896 Ladies Home Journal). This simple block created a perfect background for the Cheerwine bottle.
This block is free through the month of March 2024. After that, you can purchase the pattern for just $3. You can get the block by clicking the link: Cheerwine Block
CORRECTION: Piece C should be 6 1/2" x 3 1/2"
