Choosing Thread for Collage Quilts
Dee Ceased - 40/3 Golden Glow
Introduction
The final step in making a collage quilt that truly brings the entire project together is quilting the collage. Choosing the right thread is crucial to enhancing the overall look of your quilt. The thread you select for quilting serves as the finishing touch that pulls everything together. While the use of Steam a Seam 2 means you don’t have to sew around every piece of fabric, the quilting is what holds your collage together and transforms it from a collection of fabric scraps into a cohesive work of art.

Types of Thread Suitable for Collage Quilting
For all of my collage projects, I use cotton thread, typically from Aurifil, as it’s my favorite brand and offers a wide variety of colors. Cotton thread provides a more natural look and blends beautifully into the collage. However, it can break more easily than polyester threads, which is why I recommend using 40 wt. instead of the lighter 50 wt. Polyester or synthetic threads can also be used for collage quilting. They tend to have a bit more sheen, so your choice depends on the desired finish for your project. It’s important to choose a high-quality thread to reduce breakage and lint. Aurifil 40 wt., which comes on a green spool, is my absolute favorite for collage quilts, but I have also used the 40/3 for a few of my quilts and really like it as well.

Color Considerations
When selecting thread, it’s important to consider how different colors will interact with your collage. Given the high contrast of colors in most collage quilts, it can be challenging to find a thread that blends seamlessly with the entire project. When in doubt, opt for a neutral color, as it typically blends well with a variety of fabrics.
For a bit of extra fun, consider using variegated thread. This adds a unique touch to your quilting and can introduce depth and dimension to your quilt.

Testing and Experimentation
I always test several threads before making a final decision. I lay my quilt on the table and run the thread along the entire length of the quilt to see how it interacts with all the fabrics. Sometimes the thread I initially had in mind doesn’t work as expected, so it’s important to stay flexible and open to being surprised by the thread that ultimately looks best with your project. Don’t be afraid to experiment with a variety of colors, even those that might seem unconventional or playful.

Conclusion
In conclusion, choosing the right thread for your collage quilt is an essential part of the creative process that can elevate your work from good to great. By considering the type, color, and weight of the thread, and by allowing yourself to experiment, you can find the perfect thread that complements your design and brings your quilt to life. Remember, the right thread can transform your collage quilt into a stunning piece of art that reflects your unique vision and creativity.
