How to Make the Nine Patch T Block

Nine Patch T Blog

Learn how to make the Nine Patch T block. This block is not super difficult, but it is a chance for you to practice some of your skills that are really important in quilting. You are going to be practicing your quarter inch seam and the  sew and flip method.

This quilt block finishes at 9 ½” square. I used Chalk Texture from Benartex for my block.

Cutting instructions:

  • Fabric 1 (Dark Teal)

    • A - 8 - 2” x 2”

    • B - 1 - 1 ½” x 15”

    • C - 4 - 3 ½” x 3 ½”

  • Fabric 2 (Light Teal)

    • D - 2 - 1 ½” x 15”

    • E - 1 - 3 ½” x 3 ½”

Making the Block

  1. Sew  one D strip on either side of the B strip.   Your strip should be 3 ½” tall. A good ¼” seam is necessary here to get the correct measurement.

  2. Trim a little bit off the end of the strip set and then subcut into 4 3 ½” squares.

  3. Draw a line for corner to corner on the wrong side of A.

  4. Place A in the top left corner of the strip set (lines going vertical) with the diagonal going from the bottom left to the top right.

  5. Sew on that line.  Trim the corner ¼” from the sewn line and press toward A. This is the Sew & Flip Method. Repeat with the remaining strip sets for a total of four.

  6. Sew & Flip A to the top right corner of the strip sets (lines vertical) with the diagonal going from the bottom left to the top right. Repeat for all four strip sets.

  7. Sew C onto either side of one strip unit with lines vertical. Make two.

  8. Sew two strip units (lines horizontal) on either side of E.

  9. Sew the rows together.

So that is the nine patch T block. This is a great block that is very versatile and flipping the dark and light colors can give it  a completely different look. And this is also a really cool block to put on point.  I’ve created a coloring page so you can test out some colors before getting started: Nine Patch T Coloring Page

The video tutorial walks you through each step:

I found this block in The Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brackman. According to this resource, it was originally found in Mrs. Danner’s Quilts around 1975.
