Inspiration Behind Castor’s Light

Inspiration Behind Castor’s Light

Quilting has a unique way of connecting us to the past, blending artistry and history into each stitch. My latest quilt pattern, Castor’s Light, was inspired by a truly awe-inspiring piece of history—the stained glass windows of St. Castor’s Basilica in Koblenz, Germany.

The History of St. Castor’s Basilica

St. Castor’s Basilica holds the distinction of being the oldest church in Koblenz, with roots stretching back to its construction between 817 and 836. Though time and history have left their mark, the majority of the current structure dates to the mid-12th century, showcasing the stunning Romanesque architectural style. Over the centuries, this sacred space has hosted numerous liturgical meetings and gained prominence as a spiritual and cultural landmark. In 1991, Pope John Paul II elevated it to Basilica status, recognizing its historical and religious significance. Today, St. Castor’s Basilica is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a popular destination for visitors exploring Koblenz.

From Stained Glass to Quilted Design

Walking into the Basilica, I was captivated by the vivid, intricate designs of the stained glass windows. Their interplay of color and light transforms the space, creating a sense of wonder. The minute I saw this window I knew I wanted to recreate it into a quilt.

I have been to Koblenz and inside this amazing piece of history. We were stationed in The Netherlands and visited many places in Germany. A short drive it always seemed. We miss Northern Europe so very much.
