Halloween is just around the corner and I have a fun and easy project for you! This simple trick or treat bag is perfect for filling with candy. However, the simple construction of this bag means that you may not want to let your tric or treater load up with several pounds of candy. I'm not sure it can take that much weight!
Supplies Needed
2 Fat Quarters or 1/2 Yard of fabric
Bias Tape
Thread
Bag Directions
- Cut fabric into two 21 ½ x 18” rectangles
- Measure 4 ¼’ from top of bag. Mark a line at edge. Make another mark 1” from first mark. Repeat on the other side.
- Sew down the side, across the bottom, and up the other side. Skip the 1” mark - backstitching at both sides of the opening. Use ½” seam.
- Press seams open just past the 1” opening.
- Topstitch around the hole approximately ⅛”
- Press the top over approximately ⅓’ toward inside of bag.
- Fold top over 2 ½”. Sew around the top along bottom edge.
- Sew around entire top again - ⅝” from the top
- Turn bag inside out. Pull bottom corners to a point. Mark 2 ½” from the point.
- Mark a line across corner at the 2 ½” mark. Sew on the line. Trim ½’ from sewn line.
- Turn bag right side out and push corners flat.

Corners pushed out on the right side
Drawstring Directions:
- Cut 2 strips of bias tape at 44” long
- Close the strip and sew along open edge (coordinating thread is highly recommended). Repeat with second strip.
- Using a large safety pin - thread the bias tape through the 1” opening, going around the entire bag and coming out the original opening.
- Pull the bias tape until the ends match up. Tie ends into a knot.
- Repeat steps 3-4 with second bias strip starting and ending in the opposite opening.
Instead of bias tape, you can also use cute ribbon and save yourself a step! Just make sure is is a strong and sturdy ribbon like grosgrain.
Enjoy your cute new bag! These bags are also great for dance class, sports, and the pool!
