Phoenix Quilt Block Tutorial

Phoenix Quilt Block Tutorial

The beautifully intricate Phoenix quilt block is a great choice to practice with Y seams and templates. I chose this to be the block for May because I felt that the idea of the Phoenix fit in nicely with my word of the year, Radiance and since May is my birthday month, everything this month is all about me. According to the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, the Phoenix quilt block was first published in Hearth & Home.

The block for this tutorial  finishes at 12" x 12" (12 ½” x12 ½” unfinished). I have divided the tutorial into two parts. The first video shows how to use the templates to make the center unit. The second video shows how to make the hourglass and half-square triangle units. There is no written pattern for this block, but you can get the templates here when you sign up for my newsletter: Phoenix Block Templates
