Pressing Seams
Pressing your quilt seams should be easy, but there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your seams are nice and flat when you are piecing.
The first thing you want to do is set your seam. This simple step ensures that the fibers are nice and compact and helps to prevent the fabric from shifting. Simply place your iron on the closed seam and allow the heat to pull the fibers together.
Once I have set the seam, I gently finger press the fabric open and then lay the iron on top.
I hold the iron in place for several seconds to make sure the seam is nice and flat. Once you have pressed your seam, you can use a clapper to flatten the seam even more.
When pressing seams, especially those that are strips, it is important to lay your iron on top and not push the iron. Pushing the iron over the seams can distort the fabrics and give you a crooked seam.
