Quilter's Traveling Checklist
The Day I Forgot My Power Cord: A Lesson in Quilter's Travel Preparedness
As a quilter, traveling often means bringing along a mini version of my creative space. The excitement of exploring new places and finding inspiration for my next project is one of my favorite aspects of being part of the Wanderlust Quilt Society. However, one memorable trip taught me the importance of being well-prepared when I forgot a crucial item: my sewing machine's power cord.
The Unfortunate Oversight
Once upon a time, I would go on a craft retreat right after Thanksgiving. This was a chance to work on my Christmas gifts in secret so my family couldn't see what I was working on. My bags were packed with fabric, thread, needles, and my trusty sewing machine. Upon arriving, I quickly set up my workstation, eager to dive into a weekend of sewing bliss. But as I reached for the power cord, my heart sank. It wasn't there. In my haste, I had left it at home, rendering my sewing machine unusable. Fortunately the retreat had an extra sewing machine, but it was clunky and difficult to work with. I ended up leaving the retreat early because I just didn't have anything I could work on without my machine.

The Importance of a Checklist
That trip was a turning point for me. I realized that having a checklist for travel wasn't just about making sure I had the basics, but also ensuring I had the less obvious but equally essential items. Since then, I've created a comprehensive Quilter's Travel Checklist that I use for every trip. It's saved me from the frustration of missing tools and has allowed me to enjoy my creative retreats fully.
What's on My Quilter's Travel Checklist?
My checklist includes everything from the basics like fabric, thread, and scissors, to more specialized items like extra needles, a rotary cutter, and yes, my sewing machine's power cord! It also covers essentials like a portable ironing mat, and even has spaces for me to list out the projects I want to take. I even include a separate section just for your carry-on, so you can still create while you fly.
