Scrappy Mug Rug Tutorial
In today's blog post, I am going to show you how to make a very quick and easy mug rug using scraps. I am using a 5"x10" piece of fabric for the back, a batting scrap that is just little bit larger than 5"x10", and I have a bunch of little strips that were left over from another project. These strips were cut from a charm pack so they are all around 1"x 5".
We are going to make this using the quilt as you go method, so the first thing that we will do is make our quilt sandwich. Place the backing fabric on the back of the batting. Believe it or not, batting does have a right side and a wrong side. If you feel the batting one side will usually feel a little more smooth and the other side feels a little more bumpy, the smooth side is the right side and the bumpy side is the wrong side. So put your backing on the bumpy side.
Flip the batting and backing over so the right side of the batting is up. Place one strip right side up (wrong side to the batting) on one short edge of the batting.
Place the next strip with right side touching the right side of the first strip (wrong side up). Sew one quarter inch from the right edge (towards the center of the batting). Once the fabric is sewn, press the second strip away from the edge.
Keep going by sewing on your strips and pressing each strip open. You can see in the next few photos how I kept adding strips across the batting.
Keep going until you have sewn strips all the way across the batting.
This is the the backing fabric. You can see how it has already been quilted because of the way you sewed the strips on. Notice that my lines aren't all perfectly straight. I'm okay with that.
Your next step will be to trim around all the edges to create a rectangle with straight edges and ninety degree corners.
Once mug rug has been trimmed, it is time to add the binding. I save my unused biding strips and keep them in a tote. This made this project even easier because I didn't have to make a binding. I tested out a few of my scrap bindings to see which one I liked best. You don't need much for this project.
There you have it, the scrappy mug, rug made quilt as you go style with some strips that I had left over from another project and some batting that I had as a scrap and a backing that I had as a scrap.
Now you can put your tea or coffee mug on it and maybe a little treat. This makes a great gift for friends ans is an easy way to use up your scraps. Also, I love this little mug. It's perfect for introverts like me!
Enjoy making your scrappy mug rug!
