The Legend of the Moth Man and West Virginia Star

The Legend of the Moth Man and West Virginia Star

When we decided to do a road trip to Chicago for th H+H Americas conference, we knew we would have to make some fun stops along the way to break up the monotony of a twelve hour drive. Dince we were driving through West Virginia we just had to stop in Point Pleasant to see the Mothman statue.

Mothman is a uniquely West Viriginia cryptid. A cryptid is an animal or creature whose existence is claimed by eyewitnesses, folklore, or physical evidence, but which is not recognized by mainstream science. Mothman was first sighted in Point Pleasant, WVA in 1966. According to legend the creature was over 6 feet tall with leathery wings, and had glowing red eyes.  (Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage)

The Mothman patch is a simple design honoring this unique cryptid. He can be sewn onto clothing or a bag. I even turned one into a barette.

But the best way to honor the legend is to sew him onto the West Virginia Star Block.

The West Virginia Star block was created around 1915 by the Hearth & Home Magazine. I can be made several ways, but I have a tutorial for you that uses half-square triangles and sqaure-in-a-sqaure blocks. The block finishes at 16 ½” x 16 ½”. Perfect for a mini quilt or throw pillow.

This tutorial shows you how to make the block:

Making this block and adding the Mothman patch was such a fun way to commemorate our road trip through West Virginia. Do you make quilt blocks to celebrate your travels?
